TITLE: Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew! vol. 1, issue #4

YEAR: June 1982

COMPANY: DC Comics

Written by Roy Thomas

Artists: Scott Shaw

My journey of re-reading “Captain Carrot and His Amazing Zoo Crew!” continues and this time I’m at issue #4.

And this issue was actually the first issue that I actually purchased in the store by myself as a child and not sure how many times I’ve purchased this issue alone (as I kept reading to the point that it was all thrashed).

And it made me appreciate the super quick redneck turtle from the swamp area, Fastback!

Issue 4 revolves around half the members looking for a new headquarters, while the Byrd Rentals and Rova Barkitt have to leave as Byrd (Rubber Duck) has a film to shoot at the Okey0-Dokey Swamp, the area Fastback is from.  So, he decides to go with him since that’s his home.

The film stars top star Fara Foxette about being chased after by a mucky monster from the swamp.  Not happy about the goop that gets on her, the director has his staff member to get rid of the goop, which he disposes of it in the swamp.

And as the good flows in the water, it attaches itself to a skeleton.

Meanwhile, at home, Timmy Jo Terrapin (Fastback) meets his new stepdad and stepbrother and sister.  He tells them his secret (but makes them promise not to tell them about his amazing ability), while Captain Carrot, Alley-Kat-Abra and Pig Iron search for a new Q.

Meanwhile, as shoot for the film resumes and a monster known as Mudd shows up and Farrah Foxette tells the director to stop, but he tells them that the monster is not his.

As Mudd gets fixated on Farrah Foxette, Rubber Duck, Yankee Poodle and Fastback know they must take down this mud creature and rescue Farrah!

This issue is actually wonderful as it manages to integrate all characters in the story but also manages to focus on the lives of Timmy Jo and Byrd Rentals.

But another solid issue and one of the few series that I really enjoyed as a child that holds up for me as an adult!
