For James Robinson, the writer is known for revitalizing the character Starman earning him an Eisner Award for “Best Serialized Story”. While Paul Smith would be known for his work on “The Uncany X-Men” and “X-Factor”.
And both men would come together to create a comic that was not about superheroes and also to feature a protagonist who was female and that comic would be “Leave it to Chance”.
The series would eventually win several awards including a Harvey Award for “Best New Series”, an Eisner Award for “Best New Series” and “Best Title for Younger Readers”.
The comic would revolve around the Falconer family who have a legacy of battling supernatural threats in the city of Devil’s Echo.
Chance is hoping her father would begin her training but her father doesn’t want her to follow his footsteps, but not because she is not boy and that he doesn’t feel a girl can be a true Falconer. It’s because he lost his wife, Chance’s mother and doesn’t want her to experience the same fate.
He just wants her to grow up into a fine young woman, get married and later have a son in which he would train.
Of course, while Chance loves her father, her passion to become a Falconer and proving her father wrong prompts her to investigate an occurrence which involves a kidnapped girl.
A case that her father is supposed to take care of.
And Chance realizes by what she is about to do, will be dangerous and sure enough, she comes into contact with the kidnappers and now she is being chased through the city.
For the second volume, Chance gets some help from her pet dragon. While trying to escape, she sees sewer goblins planning to move deeper underground, with opposition from other goblins.
Meanwhile, Chance gets some help with officer Margo Vela to help find who kidnapped John Raven’s daughter but will they be able to find John Raven?
Overall, this was an interesting story and if anything, it’s more or less a story of a teen who wants to prove that she can be an investigator and not want to be hindered just because she is a female. And with the help of her new friend, officer Margo Vela, both quickly realize through their investigating that things are going to become even more dangerous.
Another entertaining issue!
