I was curious about today’s comic books and to see if annuals have changed since I last bought them.
I’m not sure when but comic book annuals have been lacking in awesome stories probably for decades. Sure, there are a few good stories but so much crap that I felt, why even bother doing an annual if you can’t make it entertaining.
But I figured, why not pickup the first annual for “All-New, All-Different Avengers” issue #1 which spotlights on Miss Marvel (Kamala Khan) and her getting home after fighting villains and now wanting to crash and check on her fanfic that she had written and submitted.
This issue features numerous writers and artists taking on a story.
While I was open to it considering the storyline is about Kamala reading fan fics, I expected some stories to be hilarious or some to be weak.
Suffice to say, there are a few storylines that were quite weak. If there was one storyline that I felt was a bit more to my liking, it was Zac Gorman’s “Up Close and Fursonal”, as it reminded me of the old “Captain Carrot and his Amazing Zoo Crew” stories that I’ve read.
If anything, this certai annual was a quick read of random stories. Some were good and a few that were just not as entertaining. I like the concept of showcasing various writers/artists taking on a story but the overall execution of it kind of fell flat.
But it made me feel that annuals are still in a rut, after all this time and hopefully in my lifetime, that when it comes to well-written storylines, one day, I may find a recent annual which I can hopefully say that it was truly awesome.
