“The New Mutants” was released in 1983 co-created by writer Chris Claremont and penciller Bob McLeod.

Thew new comic book was known for its ethnic diverse characters:

Cannonball (Sam Guthrie) – A 16-year-old kid from Kentucky who becomes invulnerable when he rockets into the air.

Karma (Xi’an Coy Manh) – A 19-year-old Vietnamese girl and the team leader who can mentally possess other people’s bodies.

Mirage/Psyche (Danielle Moonstar) – A Cheyenne Indian who can create visual empathic three-dimensional illusions.

Sunspot (Roberto da Costa) – A 14-year-old Brazilian billionaire who gains superhuman strength fueled by sunlight and could store solar energy in his body to use his strength at night.

Wolfsbane (Rahne Sinclair) – A 13-year-old religious Scot who can transform into a wolf-like creature.

And with issue #3, the comic book focused on Mirage who is having nightmares of her fellow New Mutants being killed by a monster and in her mind, it’s real.  She dreams of the Spirit Bear who is trying to kill her and she grabs her knife and stabs it.  The bear disappears and if it was a nightmare, why is there blood on her knife?

Needless to say, she tries to tell Professor X, but he fears she may be mentally unstable.

As Professor X contacts Moira McTaggart for help, her fellow New Mutants, are worried about her, Mirage overhears their conversation and how he thinks she is schizophrenic and paranoid.

That is until they see the monster and nightmares that Mirage is experiencing.  She also sees Professor X as a Brood and wonders if Professor X is the same man or a monster?  She tries to tell the others that she thinks that Professor X is trying to get rid of her but Sam doesn’t believe her.

That is until the nightmare becomes real and each of the New Mutants begin to see the horror that Mirage has been experiencing.

Overall, this is another wonderful issue by Chris Claremont and the artwork by Bob McLeod is fantastic!  A wonderful issue overall!
