With the success of the first issue of “Jonny Quest” for COMICO the Company, the next step was to continue the awesome writing and a new art direction (as the first issue’s artwork by original “Jonny Quest” artist Doug Wildey was special for the first issue alone).

William F. Messner-Loebs continued as writer, while Wendy Pini (penciller), best known for her work on “ELFQUEST” and E-Man co-creator Joe Staton (inker) continued on with the second issue.

And with this second issue, the issue would answer how Race Bannon became part of the Quest team.

As the group kicked back on the beach, Hadji asked Jonny of how Race became his tutor and bodyguard.

The story begins with Jonny talking about his loving mother and how she had gotten sick.

Jonny would talk about how close his father and his wife were and how they fell in love and even was his inspiration as he worked as a scientist.

That night while they were in the hospital after visiting his mother at the hospital, Jonny is worried that terrorist will try to kidnap his father but his father tells him that Washington is sending one of their best agents to be his bodyguard, a man named Roger Bannon.

As Bannon arrives from the airport, he doesn’t know why he needs to protect a scientist.  But immediately in the airport he notices a few assassins around and they are targeting him.

As Bannon tries to escape from them, Jonny’s father tries to help his son prepare for his mother’s death.  Jonny goes to visit his mother, and while Jonny’s father spends time with his wife during her final moments, as Jonny goes to look out the window, Roger Bannon comes crashing in.

Meanwhile, a woman is looking for her brother Maxim and how he has been acting oddly.   Jonny tells Bannon that a guy was headed to his mother’s room which makes Race and Jonny run to his mother’s room in hopes that he doesn’t get to Jonny’s father.

As the man is about to inject Jonny’s dad with something, Roger Bannon punches out the assassin.  Not long later, the following day, Jonny’s mother has passed away.

And since that day, Roger “Race” Bannon has lived with them and how he is a great guy.

If anything, I’ve always felt that this was a fitting story introducing how Bannon met the Quests.  It’s another strong story by Messner-Loebs and it’s also great to see Wendy Pini and Joe Staton as the guests artist/inker for this issue.

Again, if you are looking for a comic book series with wonderful writing and artwork, definitely give COMICO the Comic Company’s “Jonny Quest” a try!  A wonderful second issue overall!
