Jubilee has become a major part of the X-Men, especially throughout the ’90s, as Wolverine’s unofficial sidekick.

Back in 1989, she first appeared in issue #244.

The issue begins with Jubilation Lee as a mall rat in Beverly Hills performing for mall patrons.  This upsets mall security who try to put a stop to it and Jubilee ends up throwing her pyrotechnic energy blasts towards mall security, which prompts them to have all mall security trying to capture her, while the head of mall security decides to hire a mutant hunting group known as M Squad to go after her.

Meanwhile, the ladies of the X-Men are having a stressful time.  Rogue is not taking it kindly that she and Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) are sharing her body and mind and both have different ways of looking at life.  Nevertheless, Rogue/Carol are getting ticked off at each other.  And it doesn’t help that Storm and Rogue have issues as well.

Seeing the tension, Dazzler tells Storm, Carol/Rogue and Psylocke that the need a day off and Dazzler decides that they should have a ladies day off, by going shopping in the mall and possibly going to a club.

Back then, Dazzler was a party girl (and obviously loved tanning, because this issue features her with a darker skin color), Betsy Braddock (Psylocke) is probably the same as she is now…stern, Storm was a bit more aloof and cold (for those who never read her origin, she was a homeless thief) and Rogue was very emotional, sick of Carol Danvers trying to change her life (as they were sharing the same body) and always arguing with Storm, thinking the X-Men look down on her as she was a former member of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

But Jubilee, was the curious and naive teen, spying on the X-Men ladies who came out of a portal and wanted to be like one of them and eventually she would become a trusted member.

Although I heard now she’s a vampire (excuse me as I roll my eyes).

But this issue written by Chris Claremont was a pretty good first issue for Jubilation Lee and cool early artwork from Marc Silvestri.
