TITLE: Spawn – Special 25th Anniversary Edition – Issue #1

YEAR: August 2017

COMPANY: Image Comics

Story, Pencils & Inks by Todd McFarlane

Letters: Tom Orzechowski

Color: Steve Oliff

I have already blogged about “Spawn” issue #1 (1992), but with numerous Image Comics titles that are still ongoing and are celebrating their 25th anniversary, as Savage Dragon celebrated with their 225th issue, Todd McFarlane did something different to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first issue of “Spawn” and that’s giving it a Director’s Cut edition.

One should think of the Director’s Cut as they would expect from a Director’s Commentary on a DVD or Blu-ray special feature.  In this case, the issue is presented in black and white and Todd McFarlane gives a break down for each page and panel.

There is no need for me to get into the issue, as I’ve done that but I will say that I enjoyed Todd’s comments on his artwork and the overall storyline.

I had no idea that there are two versions of issue #1 with the interior page featuring one with a logo that is smudged, the other one that isn’t.

McFarlane goes into detail about the cover, featuring Spawn on the Image logo above the price, to numerous details of his artwork on each page.

This is the kind of information you don’t usually get unless you hang out with McFarlane and him giving a breakdown  for each page and various panels.  So, this Director’s Cut is really a rarity to see for a comic book release and with this issue being a 25th anniversary release, what best than to celebrate the first issue’s 25th anniversary than by doing something different and unique.

If you are a fan of “Spawn” or McFarlane’s artwork, then this “Spawn” Special 25th Anniversary Edition of issue #1 is recommended!
